MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING AT UCI

YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO US

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UCI has one of the best and highest-ranked graduate programs in the world. Our faculty have achieved national and international recognition in diverse areas such as fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, combustion, propulsion, energy generation, air pollution, systems and design, robotics and biorobotics, and microsystems.. Graduate students are a critical ingredient of our success. We are very selective of our students and provide them with a rich, state-of-the-art environment for scholarship, career advancement, and research accomplishment.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Please review carefully our programs of study and research .  Graduate studies fall into four thematic areas of scholarship:

(1) Continuum Mechanics;

(2) Power, Propulsion and Environment;

(3) Micro/Nanomechanics; and

(4) Systems and Design.

Definitions of these themes, and descriptions of thrusts within each theme, can be found on http://mae.eng.uci.edu/thrusts/mae_thrusts.htm. We urge you to study these pages carefully. Information on the entire Department can be accessed at http://mae.eng.uci.edu.

You may also contact faculty individually to learn about their current research activities and possible opportunities for student support.

If you have a strong interest in our programs, then you are most welcome to apply using the procedure below.

HOW TO APPLY

We accept only electronic applications. Please follow this link for more information, general application requirements, and online application forms.  Or, go directly to the online application site http://www.rgs.uci.edu/grad/prospective/app_online.htm.   When submitting you application, please indicate the thematic area of your preference (one of the four listed above).  You may also list specific thrust areas, as well as names of faculty you have an interest in working with.  The more specific information you provide us, the easier it will be for us to process your application and match you with the appropriate faculty.

Non-electronic material accompanying the electronic application (some score reports, reference letters, etc.) should be mailed directly to the following address: Graduate Admissions, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, Irvine, CA 92697-3975.

Applications require a fee of $60 (for US citizens and lawful permanent residents) or $80 (for all others). Your application will not be processed until this fee is received.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

SEND US THE APPLICATION MATERIAL   AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

The faster we complete your application file, the sooner we will reach a decision on admission and support. Make sure you take all required tests (GRE, TOEFL, etc.) on time and send us the results as soon as possible.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Once all the material is in, your application is evaluated by the graduate admissions committee. The faculty will decide admission and possible financial support. We are as anxious as you are to make early decisions, so we will contact you as soon a possible regarding our evaluation.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

We understand your financial needs and do our best to support deserving students. Support comes in various forms: Department Fellowships, Teaching Assistanships, Research Assistanships, special fellowships, and campus funds. Sometimes these sources are combined. See our section on graduate support. We often get questions early on about the availability of support. We will not have the answer until your application has been completed and evaluated, at which time we will let you know immediately.

Foreign students, or students whose high school education was not English-based, cannot work as Teaching Assistants unless they pass the Test of Spoken English (TSE) with a minimum score of 50. Please visit the UCI Resarch and Graduate Studies web site for more information.
