Transforming Transportation: the Air Quality Challenge
October 31, 2014
Dr. Matt Miyasato
Deputy Executive Officer,
Science & Technology Advancement,
South Coast Air Quality Management District
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is the regional agency responsible for bringing the four counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside into compliance with the Federal Clean Air standards. Although the SCAQMD has regulatory authority over stationary sources, the majority of smog-forming emissions are from the mobile sector. Despite decades of increasing stringency both at the state and local level, the region still experiences the worst air quality in the nation. Dr. Miyasato will provide an overview of the history of the smog problem, current air quality, and the need for advanced technologies, in particular zero and near-zero emission vehicles in a variety of mobile applications.
