Title: Ultrasonic Characterization of Materials

Speaker: Prof. Sridhar Krishnaswamy

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Northwestern University

Abstract:

Ultrasonic methods of materials characterization are based on launching, propagating, and observing stress waves in a structure of interest.  At Northwestern University, we are developing ultrasonic methods to characterize materials and structures ranging from the microscale to the macroscale. In this talk, I will describe our efforts in the areas of thin film material damage using acoustic nonlinearity, and structural health monitoring using adaptive fiber-optic Bragg-gating ultrasound sensor technology.
