Micro/Nanomechanics
| Micro- and nanomechanics are concerned with the physical understanding, modelling, design, fabrication and application of three-dimensional structures and systems with dimensions in the range of micrometers and below. At these small scales, the laws of classical continuun mechanics need to be revised to include physical effects related to the micro/nanoscale. In many instances, quantum-mechanical effects must be considered. Fundamental understanding and accurate modelling of those phenomena is essential for the successful design and fabrication of micro- and nano-devices, with applications to medicine, biotechnology, communications, and a host of other fields. |
