| This thrust area integrates a fundamental understanding of organ,
cell, and molecular physiology with engineering sciences and technology in order to
develop innovative devices and algorithms for medical diagnosis and treatment, and to
improve basic scientific understanding of biomedical systems. Example projects include
micromachined implantable neuroprostheses, polymer actuators for drug delivery,
microfluidics for protein and DNA sensing, acoustic imaging techniques for cancer
detection, structural analysis of bone and prosthetic implants, neural control of
movement, rehabilitation robotics, and biological propulsion
