| Design Engineering explores fundamental issues in the development and
use of technology to meet human needs. It integrates multi-body dynamics,
fluid-thermal sciences and mechanics by applying geometric methods to address issues
ranging from defining the size and shape of components needed for force and motion
specifications, to characterizing performance in terms of design parameters, cost and
complexity, as well as by focusing on details such as geometric tolerances, parts
mating and assembly planning. An important new direction incorporates decision
analysis and game theory integrated with geometric methods in Hamiltonian mechanics to
analyze multi-dimensional preference distributions. Research in decision
theory, computer aided invention, and the synthesis of mechanical systems is applied to
the development of innovative devices with applications ranging from the home and hospital
to the office and factory, as well as in vehicles of all shapes and sizes. |
